A driver has been charged with excessive speeding after a Sunday evening crash on the Trans-Canada Highway on the West Shore sent an undisclosed number of people to hospital.

The West Shore RCMP said in a release they responded to the scene just south of Leigh Road on the highway’s northbound lanes around 7:40 p.m. on Jan. 22 and found a 2011 BMW X6 had collided with a 2018 Hyundai Elantra.

In the course of their investigation, police determined the 31-year-old driver of the BMW had been driving at an estimated 180 to 200 km/h when he lost control and collided with the Elantra before sliding around 500 yards and crashing into the meridian.

Police said both vehicles were severely damaged, with photos showing both vehicles heavily scratched, dented and missing at least one wheel.

Cpl. Nancy Saggar, the detachment’s spokesperson, said in the release the passengers of the Elantra were taken to hospital by ambulance, but no life-threatening injuries were suffered in the collision. She did not specify how many people were brought to hospital.

The driver of the BMW was charged under the Motor Vehicle Act for excessive speeding, which carries a $368 fine, three penalty points on his license, and had his car impounded for seven days.
