West Shore RCMP is warning residents about cougar sightings in Colwood.
On Monday (Jan. 23) morning at around 8:20 a.m., West Shore RCMP received a call from a Colwood resident who has spotted three cougars in his backyard. The man was safe inside his home near the 580 block of Latoria Rd. in Colwood.
The cougars have moved on from the backyard of the home, but police wish to make the public aware of the confirmed cougar sighting. One of our officers was in the area conducting patrols and spotted a single cougar crossing the street and going into Havenwood Park in Colwood shortly after the call was received. The officer advised the cougar appeared to be younger and not quite full grown,
police spokesperson said Cpl. Nancy Saggar said in a statement.
BC Conservation Officer Service has been notified.
In the event of a cougar encounter, WildSafeBC advises picking up any children, acting big, and slowly backing away to give the cougar a clear escape route.
If the cougar follows, respond aggressively by making loud noises, maintaining eye contact and grabbing any nearby sticks and rocks to use as weapons. WildSafeBC says the key is acting as a threat and not prey.
If the cougar attacks, fight back. Aim for its head and eyes.
