View Royal council has approved an additional grant-in-aid for 2023, bringing the total for the year to just shy of $90,000.

At the April 18 regular meeting, council approved the $30,000 grant for the View Royal Reading Centre, the town’s only library branch.

The centre – which serves some 1,000 visitors annually – has received grants-in-aid from the town in the past, but this year Mayor Sid Tobias said council wanted to wait until it had received more information from the centre before deciding whether to approve the ask, which comes in addition to the funding the town already provides to the Greater Victoria Public Library.

Tobias said $24,000 of the grant will be used to cover the centre’s rent, and while council ultimately agreed it was important to continue its financial support, he said they are also encouraging the centre to look to other potential sources for funding in the future.
