Victoria Youth Field Lacrosse under-9 players Ronin London and Josh Morgan gather food in their helmets to help promote the association’s food drive happening this Saturday (Dec. 12) at the West Shore turf field (Juan de Fuca Velodrome).

Victoria Youth Field Lacrosse players and volunteers are doing their part to help feed the hungry this holiday season.

The association, based on the West Shore, is collecting food in aid of the Westshore Christmas Hamper Fund, which estimates it will assemble and hand out approximately 675 hampers before Dec. 25 this year.

While field lacrosse is a great way for children to experience the benefits of physical exercise, team building, sportsmanship, leadership and the excitement of competition, the food drive offers another opportunity to bond, said association president Larissa Coates.

“(It is) an opportunity for the players to come together as teams to support their local community, develop an awareness of how very fortunate they are and to experience the satisfaction of working together for the benefit of others,” she said.

Teams are collecting non-perishable food items, cash donations (cheques should be made to Christmas Hamper Fund Society) and new unwrapped toys (priority is for children 7 to 11).

The donations can be dropped off at the West-shore turf (inside the velodrome) this Saturday, Dec. 12 between 10:30 a.m. and 12:30 p.m. For more information or to schedule a donation pickup that day, contact secretary Susan Atkinson at vicfieldsecretary2015@hotmail.com.
