Teams battle each other as well as the heat

Teams vying for the senior girls’ soccer AAA Island championship took to the field Monday (May 15).

Eight teams are battling it out to make it to the provincials, with two teams from the tournament set to qualify. Games were held at Goudy Field and Royal Bay Secondary Field, with a large crowd of classmates cheering on the team from Belmont during the team’s second game against Stelly’s Secondary School.

Belmont was the sole Sooke School District team in the tournament, which also included Reynolds, Oak Bay and Claremont secondary schools, plus three schools from up Island.

Teams were also battling the heat, with the lingering heat wave that broke temperature records for three consecutive days in Greater Victoria, including Monday.

Each team played two games on Monday, with playoffs planned for Tuesday.
