Colin Gall provides the lowdown on West Shore teams playing this week

It’s a busy week in West Shore hockey. The Victoria Grizzlies play two BCHL games at home this week before crossing the pond for two games in Powell River.

Friday night (Nov. 4) the Grizz host the Alberni Valley Bulldogs at The Q Centre before welcoming Vernon on Saturday. Both games have a 7 p.m. puck drop.

In Island junior B play the Westshore Wolves open the week on Sunday (Nov. 6), heading across town to face the Victoria Cougars at 3:30 p.m. at Archie Browning Sports Centre. The Wolves return to The Q Centre next Wednesday to host the Kerry Park Islanders at 7 p.m.

In tier 1 midget minor hockey, the Juan de Fuca Grizzlies play two at home this weekend, hosting Nanaimo at 1 p.m. Saturday and Comox Valley at 4 p.m. on Sunday at The Q Centre.

Turning to rugby, Westshore’s premier men visit the Castaway Wanderers Saturday at UVic for a 2:45 p.m. game.

The Valkyries premier women host CW at 11:30 a.m. Saturday at the Juan de Fuca field, the same time as the Div. 2 Westshore women host Comox. That’s followed at 1 p.m. by Westshore 2 vs. CW 2 in Div. 1 men’s play.

In soccer, the Westcastle United Div. 2 men host Vic West Casuals at Westhills Stadium this Saturday at 7 p.m. And in Island Div. 1 women’s play, Juan de Fuca FC plays Prospect Lake on Saturday at Layritz Park, with kick-off at 6 p.m. On Sunday, JdF United plays Gorge FC at noon at Hampton Park.

In high school sports, volleyball and boys soccer have started their playoffs. Meanwhile, the Belmont junior varsity football Bulldogs finish up their regular season in Kelowna against Mount Boucherie. The senior varsity Bulldogs are due to start the AAA playoffs Nov. 11 or 12, with teams still being determined at press time.
