Several Greater Victoria schools dazzled at the high school rugby provincials held in Abbotsford from May 31 to June 3, particularly on the sevens side.
Claremont’s girls team from Saanich dominated throughout the tournament, scoring 247 points total and conceeding just 12. Their closest game was in the final against Saanich-based St. Michaels University School, where they won 21-5. In the bronze medal game, Esquimalt narrowly lost out 5-10 to Kamloops-based Norkham. Oak Bay came in fifth.
On the boys side, Central Saanich’s Stelly’s Secondary School handily beat Vernon’s Clarence Fulton 26-0 in the final of the boys’ sevens tournament. Langford’s Belmont Secondary came fifth with a 38-0 win over North Vancouver’s Windsor in their consolation game. Courtenay’s Georges P. Vanier came third, winning 17-12 in the bronze medal game.
In the fifteens, Shawinigan Lake’s girls team won the AA Girls final, beating Langley’s D.W. Poppy 22-5. Mark R Isfeld from Courtenay came fourth after losing 17-24 to Abbotsford Senior in the bronze medal match.
In the AAA tournament, Cowichan came fourth after losing the bronze medal match to Lake City from Williams Lake. Georges P. Vanier came fifth after cruising to victory against Carson Graham from North Vancouver, winning 53-0.
On the boys’ side, Shawnigan Lake narrowly lost in the AAA tier one final Vancouver’s St. George’s 14-20, with Oak Bay missing out on a bronze medal after losing 18-31 to Carson Graham.
In the AA tournament, the Island’s best placed finisher was St. Michaels University School, who came in fifth after beating Richmond-based McMath 32-24 in the consolation game.
