BCHL Grizzlies and Kings fit to be tied

Split in Powell River leaves Victoria still tied with Sunshine Coast squad

Having emerged from a weekend in Powell River with a split, the Victoria Grizzlies enter this week’s B.C. Hockey League play still sharing first place in the Island Division with the Kings.

Powell River rebounded from Friday’s 5-2 loss to the Grizzlies to win by the same score Saturday night. Rookie Marty Westhaver scored both Victoria goals in game 2, after the Kings opened up a 5-0 lead and chased Grizzlies starter Matthew Galajda from the net.

Friday saw Keyvan Mokhtari and Tyler Welsh tally a goal and an assist each for the winners, who led 4-0 at one point.

The Grizzlies have a big weekend at home this weekend, with three games in as many days.

Victoria hosts Alberni Valley on Friday (Nov. 18), then does battle with the Kings again on Saturday (both 7 p.m. starts). The Trail Smokeaters come to The Q Centre for their only regular season appearance on Sunday, for a 2 p.m. matinee game.

Bear claws… Grizzlies leading scorer Cole Pickup will remain out of the lineup for the first two games this weekend, after being assessed a four-game suspension for a blow to head penalty he received in a Nov. 5 home game against Vernon. He missed both games in Powell River … The Grizzlies are holding their annual sock drive for Our Place. Fans bringing 10 pairs of unused socks to a game this weekend will receive a voucher for a game ticket to a future Grizzlies game.
