West Shore RCMP vehicle involved in major collision in Mill Bay

Umarked SUV collides with pickup truck, injuries treated at scene

Anyone traveling up-Island for the Family Day long weekend who didn't leave until Friday evening after work likely took longer than they expected to get where they were going.

Traffic was backed up for many kilometres in both directions along the Trans Canada Highway due to an crash at Mill Bay involving an unmarked West Shore RCMP SUV and a pick-up truck. Southbound traffic was detoured while northbound traffic was directed around the intersection by traffic controllers as collision analysts examined the scene.

Preliminary information shared by police suggested the Toyota pick-up truck driven by a 46-year-old Cobble Hill man was traveling east on Frayne Road where it intersects the Trans Canada Highway. The truck was struck by a southbound unmarked West Shore RCMP SUV at approximately 6 p.m.

Both the driver of the pick-up and his passenger, a six-year-old boy, as well as the officer, were treated on scene for minor injuries.

Anyone who may have witnessed this collision is being asked to contact South Island Traffic Services, who are investigating, at 250-416-0352.

The Independent Investigations Office of B.C. has been notified of the incident since it involved a police officer and vehicle, but they have not, as of print deadline, asserted jurisdiction over the incident.
