The provincial government has announced a new board chair as well as a new board member for Island Health.

Health Minister Adrian Dix has appointed Leah Hollins as the new board chair and View Royal councillor Ron Mattson as a new board member.

Hollins served as the deputy minister of health for the province as well as the chair of the Canadian Blood Services board of directors for eight years, chair of the board of directors of Maximus Inc., and was also part of the departmental audit committee for Veterans’ Affairs Canada.

Hollins also received the Order of Canada for her contributions to organ and tissue donation and transplantation.

Mattson also worked for the province as a senior manager with the Ministry of Health. He primarily managed research initiatives, policy and administration. He is also serving his seventh term as a View Royal councillor.

“Hollins and Mattson both have a long history of public service and significant experience in health care,” Dix said in a statement. “Our goal as a government is to provide leadership for a strong public health-care system in British Columbia and we are confident that these appointments will support this goal.”

Dix added that the Island will benefit greatly from both appointments.

“It’s great to have an Order of Canada recipient and a devoted public service and community planning member join the board, lending their history, technical expertise and level of dedication to helping health care on the island reach its maximum potential.”

Dix also extended his thanks to previous board chair Don Hubbard and member Matthew Watson for their service.
