Langford wins excellence award for City Centre Park

Municipality did a lot of things right in planning and building facilities, parks and rec association states

The City of Langford has won a 2014 B.C. Recreation and Parks Association Facility Excellence Awards for City Centre Park.

The award, presented Thursday in Kelowna at the association's annual conference, recognizes excellence in facility concept, design development, maintenance or operation in a facility that demonstrates outstanding innovation and significant impact in the recreation and parks sector.

City Centre Park’s multi-use facilities are enjoyed by families and individuals, as well as by a variety of sports teams ranging from juniors and amateurs to athletes at the professional league level. It is also the national training centre for Rugby Canada and the home field for the B.C. Junior Football League's Victoria Rebels.

Among the features the association spotlighted about the park were its unique design, community consultation and service to the public, awareness of the environment and commitment to accessibility. The park's central location and accessibility through walking, cycling, wheeling or taking public transit were also noted.

“City Centre Park provides recreation opportunities for all users; children, youth, adults, seniors and special needs groups,” said association CEO Suzanne Allard Strutt. “The intention behind City Centre Park is that no physical or financial barrier will prevent participation.”

The conference brings together members of the parks and recreation sector from across B.C., including elected officials, volunteers, members of the business community and others interested in building and sustaining active, healthy lifestyles and communities in B.C.
