Langford cyclist struck in hit and run

A 51-year-old Langford cyclist was sideswiped and injured by a van last week, which fled the scene, say West Shore RCMP.

The man was riding along Maplebank Road, near Admirals Road, in View Royal on March 10 around 3:30 p.m. when he was struck by the right-side mirror of a red cargo van.

The driver stopped at the scene and got out of the vehicle, police say, but then drove off without a word after seeing the cyclist pick himself up. The cyclist spent the night at the hospital being monitored for a head injury and suffered a fractured ankle.

The cyclist credits his helmet for saving him from a serious or possibly fatal head trauma. West Shore RCMP considers this incident a hit and run.

The van is described as a red, mid-1980s Ford, with customized blacked out square windows in the rear, spare tire mounted on the back door and was rusted. No license plate number was obtained.

West Shore RCMP are asking anyone who may have witnessed has information about this incident to contact West Shore RCMP (file No. 2011-2944) at 250-474-2264 or call Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-TIPS (8477).
