A 51-year-old Langford cyclist was sideswiped and injured by a van last week, which fled the scene, say West Shore RCMP.
The man was riding along Maplebank Road, near Admirals Road, in View Royal on March 10 around 3:30 p.m. when he was struck by the right-side mirror of a red cargo van.
The driver stopped at the scene and got out of the vehicle, police say, but then drove off without a word after seeing the cyclist pick himself up. The cyclist spent the night at the hospital being monitored for a head injury and suffered a fractured ankle.
The cyclist credits his helmet for saving him from a serious or possibly fatal head trauma. West Shore RCMP considers this incident a hit and run.
The van is described as a red, mid-1980s Ford, with customized blacked out square windows in the rear, spare tire mounted on the back door and was rusted. No license plate number was obtained.
