Langford Fire Rescue was called back to Mount Finlayson on Sunday, this time at the request of B.C. Ambulance Service.
A 16-year-old hiker fell, broke his ankle and was unable to make his way off the mountain. He was hiking with two other individuals at the time.
The department’s technical rescue team was dispatched, transporting the injured teen in a basket stretcher, lowering him with ropes until the team could carry him to the ambulance. The rescue took about two hours and involved nine firefighters from all three Langford halls.
Firefighters were also busy March 24 with multiple motor vehicle incidents, including a crash on Sooke Road near Glen Lake Road that forced closure of Sooke Road to traffic for several hours.
In that incident, a vehicle left the roadway and broke a utility pole before stopping on its side in a driveway. The lone occupant, a woman, was transported to hospital with non-life threatening injuries. Fire crews had to cut the roof of the vehicle open to free her.
Traffic was diverted down Happy Valley Road until B.C. Hydro could repair the damaged pole. The cause of the crash had not been determined as of this writing.
