HST referendum dates announced

Ballots for the referendum on the HST will be mailed out to registered voters on June 13.

The question posed by the referendum will be: “Are you in favour of extinguishing the HST (Harmonized Sales Tax) and reinstating the PST (Provincial Sales Tax) in conjunction with the GST (Goods and Services Tax)? Yes/No.”

Elections B.C. will run the referendum. Completed ballots must be mailed to Elections B.C. or delivered to a Service B.C. centre by 4:30 p.m. on July 22.

The 12 per cent HST was instated in B.C. on July 1, 2010, to replace the seven per cent PST and five per cent GST. Its poor reception was a major reason for former premier Gordon Campbell’s resignation.
