Few squawks about urban chickens

In the year since View Royal began allowing backyard chickens and beekeeping, bylaw officers have heard few complaints.

No complaints were made about beehives, and only two were logged about chickens — one for a coop too close a property line and the other for an individual keeping ducks, which is not permitted under the bylaw.

In a bylaw review, Town staff did not recommend any changes. Residents have inquired about expanding the bylaw to permit other types of fowl, such as ducks and geese, but View Royal is not considering that at this time.

Residents are permitted to keep up to four hens and no roosters. Two to four beehives are also allowed depending on property size. No permits or licenses are required.
