Cyclist struck in Langford early Tuesday morning

Reports incident to police after being checked out of hospital

A cyclist reported to police Tuesday morning that he had been struck by a vehicle around 12:30 a.m. as he rode south on Matson Road in Langford.

The man stated he was riding towards Goldstream Avenue when he heard a vehicle approaching from behind. He was then reportedly struck by the vehicle, suffering a broken jaw and a concussion. He sought medical attention on his own and was discharged from hospital a short time later before talking to police.

"Luckily, the cyclist was wearing a helmet," said Const. Alex Berube of the West Shore RCMP, "which most likely reduced the level of his injuries." He added that cyclists must wear reflective clothing, have front and back visible lights when riding in the dark, and abide by the same rules as motorists. "Be seen, be safe," he said.

Anyone with information about this incident is asked to contact West Shore RCMP at 250-474-2264 or Crimestoppers at 1-800-222-TIPS (8477).
