A cougar was spotted in a Langford backyard Tuesday (May 9).
Police were called around 9:45 p.m. after a cougar was spotted in the backyard of a residence near the 500-block of Treanor Avenue in Langford. The cougar was briefly in the backyard before jumping the fence and scarpering. Police patrolled the area but couldn’t find the big cat.
“Police have notified B.C. Conservation Services and we only received one reported sighting of the cougar, however given the proximity to residences and a nearby school we wish to inform the public of the sighting,” Cpl. Nancy Saggar, police spokesperson wrote in a statement.

In March, a Langford family’s cat was killed in the Thetis Heights neighbourhood by a cougar.
“He was literally ripped apart not even 10 feet from the back of our house,” Charmaine Corbin wrote, attributing the death to a cougar. “We have lived here for 25 years and nothing like this has ever happened.”
Last month a Colwood resident captured video of a cougar with a dead deer in her driveway.
Police urged people wanting more information on how to safely navigate cougar interactions to visit the province’s website.
