Fortis BC crews were on the scene repairing a gas leak on Goldstream Avenue in Langford Thursday (Feb. 16) afternoon.

The leak was in the area around Peatt and Bryn Maur roads along Goldstream Avenue.

It was reported around 1:15 p.m. Thursday (Feb. 16) and crews were on the scene five minutes later. Gas was under control around 4 p.m., according to Jas Baweja, a spokesperson with Fortis BC, and crews finished repairs and restored service to customers in the area at around 6:30 p.m. Thursday night. The gas line was damaged by a third-party, according to Baweja, but did not provide specific details.

Water main replacement work is ongoing along Goldstream Avenue, with two older Capital Regional District water mains along the main thoroughfare, which are made of aging asbestos cement piping and deemed not seismically resilient, being replaced by one larger water main made of restrained ductile iron piping.

Some businesses were evacuated in the immediate area but were allowed to return back to work shortly after.

Baweja said anyone who is planning any digging should always call BC One Call prior to digging to avoid similar incidents.
