Are you looking to broaden your young learner’s horizons, in an inter-cultural setting that features small class sizes and a chance to develop internationally transferable skills?
Maybe you’d like to enhance your child’s creativity and problem-solving skills, and see them well-prepared for post-secondary studies and beyond?
The team at Brookes Westshore, the International Baccalaureate school that opened its doors in Colwood in September after 10 years in Shawnigan Lake, know teaching students in a broad-based, global way gives them a leg up as they move forward in life.
Here’s how:
- Academics + global social consciousness
Part of the IB World School program’s mandate is “to develop inquiring, knowledgeable and caring young people.”
While that may, in itself, be enough to pique your interest, there’s also the post-secondary success rate of IB students. Jerry Salvador, Brookes Westshore Head of School, notes that IB students complete their bachelor’s degree on average 96 per cent of the time. In B.C., that compares to an overall undergraduate completion rate of between 56.5 and 76.4 per cent.
The key, Salvador says, is IB students come into university well prepared for the pace and academic challenges they’ll face. In fact, the IB Diploma Program (Grades 11 and 12) sees many IB students get a head start by completing first-year university equivalent courses. “That’s one great advantage,” he says. “But more importantly, students feel comfortable at university, they’re independent, critical thinkers, good researchers and have learned how to work collaboratively.”
Among the benefits of studying at an International Baccalaureate school, Salvador says, is students are examined using IB world standards, rather than being assessed on a local or regional basis. “That’s why the universities know exactly what it means to come out of an IB program; the IB does the assessment and it’s criteria-based, not norm-based.”
Part of an education group with schools in the U.K., India, Russia and South Korea, Brookes Westshore also has a full complement of facilities, with new extra-curricular options being created for students all the time.
