The City of Colwood has taken a big step toward the construction of a new pedestrian overpass for the Galloping Goose Regional Trail with the awarding of the construction contract.

Surespan Construction has been awarded the $5,113,670 contract, which is expected to take 28 weeks to complete once final designs have been approved. Surespan is targeting a completion date before 2026.

Of that, $3.6 million in funding has been provided by the Investing in Canada Infrastructure program, with the city covering the remaining costs through a reserve fund which has been budgeted.

The bridge, which will cross Sooke Road near Ocean Boulevard, will feature several value-added options approved by council including enhanced underlighting, black powder-coated fencing, a natural wood railing, and stamped concrete with a rock pattern.

In addition to the new trail bridge, Colwood is considering other improvements connected to the Goose, including improvements to the crossing at Wale and Wilfert Roads.

These improvements could include a fully signalized intersection, a diagonal shared crossing for the trail, bike lane protection, an extension to the sidewalk along Wilfert Road, and safer turning movements for large vehicles.

These proposed changes are scheduled to be discussed by the city’s Active Transportation Committee at its Oct. 16 meeting.
