On May 21, the City of Langford announced that former long-time Langford councillor, John Goudy, has died.

“He was a real community man, and it was great to have him on council,” said Stew Young, former Langford Mayor who served with Goudy.

Goudy was with the City of Langford for almost 15 years, and his philanthropy was well known throughout the municipality.

“He was a real force…he always stepped up,” Young said.

Ravi Parmar, MLA for Langford and Juan de Fuca, said Goudy Library, Goudy field, securing investment for the new Belmont High School and various investments into Langford sport cannot be overlooked.

“He had a real passion for education for sports and recreation and the ability to help young people thrive in their community,” he said.

According to Parmar, he was very community-minded and always wanted what was best for his community.

“It’s a big loss for our community,” he said.

Young describes Goudy as a man who put his money where his mouth was and did not support a cause just for the sake of it, but because it benefited his community.

“A guy who was very focused on what he did. A lot of people looked up to him,” Young said.

The City of Langford lowered flags to half-mast on Friday, May 17, in honour of Goudy.

“On behalf of the City of Langford and members of Langford Council, I want to extend my deepest condolences to the family and friends of former Langford City Councillor John Goudy,” said City of Langford Mayor Scott Goodmanson.
