Metchosin Biodiversity Day this Saturday

Celebrate Metchosin’s biodiversity this Saturday with a number of events led by the District and Capital Regional parks naturalists. From 10 a.m. until 1 p.m. there will be tide pool exploration (near the blue tent by the picnic tables) at Witty’s Lagoon on the main beach. Other events include at beach plant walk from 10 to 10:30 a.m. led by Paige Eriksson-McGee from the Habitat Acquistion Trust, a estuary walk, led by Joel Ussery of the Metchosin Biodiversity Project from 10:30 to 11:30 a.m., a beach seine from 11 a.m. until noon, and a forest walk led by Andy MacKinnon, also from the Metchosin Biodiversity Project, from noon until 1 p.m.

Over at Tower Point, which will be accessible with minimal wading from Witty’s Lagoon due to low tide, scuba divers will be showcasing some of the sub-tidal creatures they discover. Divers emerge at 10:30 a.m. and creatures will be on display until 12:30 p.m.

Coffee House features special concert

The Highlands Music Coffee House returns this Saturday, July 14 at 7:30 p.m. with a Spanish twist.

Resonance, made up of soprano Lisa Tinney and Kathryn Le Gros on the piano and clarinet will be joined by special guest Amor, also known as Alex Jang on the guitar. The trio will be performing lively, rhythmic Spanish music from Medieval times to the 20th century.

This month’s showcase will be a concert and not the traditional format, so a donation of $10 is suggested for admission. Children under the age of 15 are free and don’t forget to bring your own mug for tea or coffee in the historic Caleb Pike House, 1589 Millstream Rd.

Lend a hand to dig up invasive species

The Greater Victoria Green Team is looking for some eager volunteers to get their hands dirty on a West Shore project. The organization will be working in Colwood Creek Park to remove invasive species this Sunday, July 15 from 9:45 a.m. until 1 p.m.

No experience required, meet at the entrance near Sundridge Valley Drive and Antrobus Crescent. Pre-registration isn’t required but you can register as a Green Team volunteer by going to bit.ly/2GEDEO9.

Learn more about protecting your community

West Shore residents are invited to join the West Shore RCMP on Thursday, July 19 at 7 p.m. for a presentation on neighbourhood block watch and community security awareness.

The session takes place in View Royal’s council chambers, 45 View Royal Ave. No pre-registration is required.
