The 848 Royal Roads Air Cadets showed off their marching skills and demonstrated other skills in front of guests that included a former Snowbirds flyer, at their annual awards ceremony last week at Belmont secondary.

The ceremonial reviews are conducted at corps and squadrons across the country, but each one is unique, said Capt. Mandart Chan, the 848 squadron’s commanding officer.

“The cadets and staff of 848 RRU Cadet Squadron had a tremendous year and worked very hard in putting together this ceremony,” he said. “All in all, it was a fantastic evening.”

Warrant Officer First Class Dayton Teague was named most outstanding cadet and received the Commanding Officer Award. Sgt. Sam Staples received the Lord Strathcona Medal and Warrant Officer Second Class Ben Thompson was awarded the Legion Medal of Excellence.

Sgt. Breanna Williams was recognized for achievement and initiative, while Warrant Officer Second Class Connor Melanson was awarded a medal for contribution to cadet athletics. Fellow WO2 Jamie Acosta received the 800 Wing bursary.

Among the special guests was retired Lt.-Col. Robert “Scratch” Mitchell, who served as reviewing officer. The former Colwood resident flew with and was commanding officer for the internationally renowned Snowbirds during his career.

The 3005 11th Service Battalion and the 3005 Army Cadets also took part in the May 31 ceremony.
