Colwood City Hall lit up for the holidays on Wednesday (Dec. 8) as the annual Christmas Light Up returned – bigger and better than ever.

Hundreds of people filled the city hall grounds despite chilly seasonal weather, keeping warm with the help of free hot chocolate and hot dogs served up by council members and city staff.

Entertainment was in no short supply thanks to school choirs from Sangster, Wishart and David Cameron elementary schools singing Christmas carols, with the evening wrapped up with a performance by the Chrysalis Quartet.

Arts and Culture Colwood Society and West Shore Parks and Recreation were also on hand, offering kids craft activities and a place to warm up inside city hall.

Of course, the highlight of the night came when Santa Claus himself made the trip from the North Pole by catching a ride with Colwood Fire Rescue on one of their fire trucks, before finding a comfy chair inside to meet and take photos with excited children.

“I think it’s been pretty phenomenal … everyone seems to be having a great time tonight. It’s by far the biggest turn out in the 10 years since I have been coming to these,” said Mayor Doug Kobayashi. “It’s just great for the Christmas spirit … I just love having the kids out here singing for the community.”
