Get ready for hearts to grow as the Grinch paddles the Gorge ahead of Christmas.

As it says in the famed book by Dr. Seuss: “Maybe Christmas doesn’t come from a store. Maybe Christmas perhaps means a little bit more.”

Perhaps it comes from hitting the water with friends new and old.

That’s the goal for Curtis Beccker, who invites everyone out for his second round of Grinch on the Gorge

He first did a paddle in December 2020, making use of a costume purchased the year before to entertain his niece and nephew. He figured the world needed a little lightheartedness so grabbed his Max stuffy and a sack and hit the paddle board.

“People on the gorge lined up and waved,” he said.

He anticipated some attention, but not the level achieved. Friends kept tagging him and sending messages of photos of him on social media.

“People asked me to invite them next time, even though I don’t know them,” he said.

While the last few years have been busy, the Grinch returns Dec. 23 and invites invites everyone, on SUP boards, kayaks, canoes or whatever, to follow him along and spread holiday spirit.

The rules are simple, dress festive and be safe.

“I don’t know how popular it will be. I know it’s a crazy time of year to be going to the water, or on the water, that’s why I put wear pfd’s, wetsuits and lifejackets,” Becker said. “We’ll all look after on another out there and have a great time.”

Departing from Craigflower beach alongside Admirals and Gorge Rd. West. on Saturday, Dec. 23 at 11 a.m.

Parking is limited.

“I’m really excited and looking forward to it I know my family can’t wait to watch on sidelines,” Becker said. “I just hope it doesn’t snow on us.”
