Thinking about what to do with your pumpkins after Halloween? Langford Fire Rescue has got you covered with its annual Pumpkin Smash.

Taking place in the Millstream Village parking lot, residents will have the chance to see their pumpkins fall from the fire department’s 105-foot ladder truck and splatter into pieces on the ground.

Lance Caven, the assistant chief of fire prevention with Langford Fire Rescue, said the event has gone on for at least four years in a row and also includes a barbecue.

“It gets very messy…there’s lots of pumpkin bits all over the parking lot,” Caven said. “It’s always fun.”

Caven said those attending the event can also donate money to benefit Muscular Dystrophy and the B.C. Professional Firefighters Burn Fund.

“It’s a fun way to get rid of your pumpkin and help a good cause,” Caven said.

The Pumpkin Smash takes place on Nov. 4, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at 2400 Millstream Rd.

There will also be a Halloween Open House at Langford Fire Rescue’s three stations on Oct. 31 from 5:30-8:30 p.m. with trick-or-treating and free hot dogs, candy and hot chocolate.

The View Royal Fire Department hosts its own pumpkin smash on Nov. 4 at the View Royal fire hall from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Donations from the pumpkin smash will go towards the Movember campaign. On Halloween, the fire department will host a haunted house at the fire hall from 5-9 p.m. with free snacks and refreshments.

The Colwood Volunteer Firefighters Association will also be holding its annual Halloween Bonfire on Oct. 31 from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. at the Colwood Fire Hall on Metchosin Road. It will feature a child friendly bonfire, music and free hot dogs and hot chocolate.

The Metchosin Fire Department will be holding its own event on Halloween from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. with fireworks, a costume contest and free hot dogs, hot chocolate and coffee.

The Highlands Firefighters Association will have Halloween festivities starting at 7 p.m. at the Community Hall. There will be a bonfire, fireworks and free hot dogs and refreshments.
