In a quiet Langford cul-de-sac, residents are growing sunflowers, strawberries and a sense of community.

Linda Fedun says several residents along Glen Willow Place came together around three years ago to clear out the weeds on the verge at the end of her cul-de-sac, and around that time gardening exchange stands started popping up in Colwood.

That planted the seed in Fedun’s mind.

“I thought, ‘This is such a great idea to get things started and keep the prices down,’” she said. “Most of these plants that are here didn’t cost us anything because we were able to go the plant stands. I’ve always wanted one just for that reason.”

With some equipment and helping hands, the Glen Willow Plant Exchange grew. It works like a little free library – take a plant, leave a plant (or seeds or other gardening-related equipment). Everyone is encouraged to stop by the stand.

Fedun has lived in the area for more than 20 years and keeps stock of what plants have been taken and left. She works with several of the other residents to maintain the two garden patches which are open to everyone, from green thumbs like her to those who only occasionally have free time.

“People just love to come out and see this here,” she said. “People know when the strawberries are growing because all the kids are out here eating them.”

Fedun hopes other people will be inspired to start their own stands, which she says will help more people get their start gardening and build a sense of togetherness with neighbours.

“It’s a community effort and we’re just getting more and more people to realize it’s here and it’s not just us, it’s supposed to be a shared thing.”
