Between the numerous disruptions to supply chains, the COVID-19 pandemic, and a few other curve balls thrown at local businesses, it’s now more important than ever to support local.

With that in mind, as we head into the holiday season, we’ll be introducing – or reintroducing – our readers to some of the West Shore businesses that help make this community great.

The dedication to customers and community that form the cornerstones of Peninsula Co-op’s approach to business are instilled in PenCo Liquor.

“As a co-operative owned by our members, it’s important for us to continue to look for opportunities to diversify our business to keep it strong and thriving for years to come,” said Lindsay Gaudette, director of marketing and community relations for Peninsula Co-op. “The opportunity to purchase two Liquor Depot stores arose after careful review, and we felt they would be a great addition to our business offering.”

Peninsula Co-op has been in operation as a co-operative for more than 40 years, with more than 350 people employed at grocery, petroleum and convenience stores on Vancouver Island.

“We spent the past several months working to transition the liquor stores to their new name while making updates to the sites to better welcome customers and members,” Gaudette noted.

“We’re a local company and we’re committed to giving back to where we live, work and play. As a co-op, we’re a different kind of business because we share our profits with our members, our staff, and our community.”

Peninsula Co-op donates more than $500,000 a year to local charities, organizations, youth groups, student scholarships and community projects.

Members will be able to earn rebates on their purchases at PenCo Liquor now, in addition to the rebates earned through purchases at Peninsula Co-op’s other businesses.

“We are committed to the care of our staff, our members and our community,” Gaudette added.

“We’ve been fortunate to be named employer of the year and business of the year several times, and have been recognized for our commitment to giving back to the community as well.”

Gaudette had some words of wisdom she was happy to share with anyone starting a new business.

“You’re only as good as your staff are, so treat your team like family. Loyalty and commitment are earned, and we’re honoured to have so many long-term employees on our team.”

PenCo Liquor stores’ selection of beers, wines, coolers and spirits are available at 104-3510 Blanshard St. in Saanich, and 2835 Bryn Maur Rd. In Langford.
