A cyclist suffered life-threatening injuries after being hit while riding in View Royal on Sunday (March 24).

West Shore RCMP was called shortly before 5 p.m. for a cyclist hit by a driver in the intersection of Island Highway and Burnside Road West.

The 55-year-old man who was riding a bike was taken to hospital and the driver of the vehicle, a 21-year-old man was cooperative with the investigation, RCMP said in a news release.

Burnside Road West eastbound lanes were closed for several hours for investigation and was expected to reopen overnight.

The cause of the collision is still under investigation, though police confirm impairment was ruled out for the driver.

West Shore RCMP stated the department would provide an update later in the week once more information becomes available.
