Black Press and Staples, in partnership with Camosun College, are proud to recognize some of the great teachers found here in the Capital Region. We asked our readers to nominate teachers who have gone above and beyond to make a difference in the lives of the students they teach.

Cathy Prette is a teacher at Crystal View elementary school. Here is what nominator Tina Vandermark had to say about her:

You know that one teacher that changes your life? The one that helps mould you into who you are? Well times that by three!

All three of my kids have had the honour of being taught and valued by Ms. Prette. As she reaches retirement in the next few years I want to honour her with this nomination. All three of my kids consider her their favourite teacher. All three of them have had school based anxiety, which she patiently supported and taught them to be confident in who they are.

Anyone can teach but not everyone can change a life. My kids would not be the people they are today without the love and encouragement that Ms.Prette gives every day. She went above and beyond just teaching. She bought a ticket to my daughters dance recital, she spends hours outside of work hours just talking with kids and making them feel valued and special.

She truly meets each child where they are with caring and compassion. Not only is she an inspiration to my kids, she is an inspiration to me as a mother. Please consider honouring this wonderful teacher and human being.

Look for our Great Teachers special section running June 21 which will recognize the three teachers selected as this year’s representatives as well as list all of the West Shore nominees.
