Victoria Mariners defeat the Abbotsford Cardinals 7-2 to win B.C. Junior Premier Baseball League championship

The Victoria Jr. Mariners are provincial champions.

Tanner Hess pitched all seven innings as the Victoria Mariners defeated the Abbotsford Cardinals 7-2 in the B.C. Junior Premier Baseball League’s championship final on Sunday (Aug. 12).

Hess allowed seven hits throughout the seven innings, but only allowed two runs and one walk while striking out two.

Fifteen-year-old Mitch Bryan, playing second base, hit a sacrifice RBI in the second inning and a two-run single in the third inning. Nick Dawson had two RBI and Lucas Piechnik and Zach Downey each had one.

Earlier on Sunday the Mariners gutted out a 1-0 semfinal win over the Coquitlam Redlegs.

The game’s only run came in the bottom of the fifth when Piechnik hit a triple in the that scored Bryan from second.

Downey pitched the complete-game shutout and struck out five batters while allowing three hits and two walks.
