Sprint cars, modifieds thrill large crowds

Montgomery a major factor on Strawberry Cup weekend

Jeff Montgomery went two for two on Friday night, capturing both the winged and non-winged sprint car main events during Strawberry Cup weekend at Western Speedway.

The winged sprint cars rolled off for their 20-lap main with Paul and Matt Verhagen leading the field to the green. Coming out of turn four to take the green, Robbie Price and Kyle Vantreight made contact, knocking both drivers out of contention. On the restart, Duane Zeinstra took the lead, before Montgomery stormed into first, going on to win over Zeinstra, Paul Verhagen, Matt Verhagen and Phil Lagan, in that order.

Earlier in the non-winged sprint car feature main, better known as the Billy Foster Memorial, leader Mike Meeres was overtaken by Montgomery on lap 13. Two caution restarts later, Montgomery brought home his first win of the season. Jeff Bird wound up second followed by Barrett, Brad Purdey and Jarrod Heap.

Saturday’s action saw Guy Barrett win the non-winged main by a car length ahead of Montgomery, while Robbie Price came from behind to win the winged division main ahead of Montgomery, Duane Zeinstra, Kyle Vantreight and Matt Verhagen.
