SOCCER: Gordon Head poised to take over as Gorge trapped in rebuild

The spectrum of men's Island league soccer is different without Gorge

Nanaimo's Jamie Arbanas

The rebuild has begun for Gorge FC .

The latest growing pain came in Nanaimo on Sunday. Gorge lost 2-1 to Nanaimo Utd., the latter’s first win over Gorge since September 2008.

Gorge is no longer the perennial first place team it was, and are are currently seventh place in Div. 1 of the Vancouver Island Soccer League with five wins, eight losses.

Following last year’s silver medal at nationals, Gorge experienced as mass exodus of its core players from the last decade. The team went from being one of the oldest to one of the youngest in the elite division of the Vancouver Island Soccer League.

Meanwhile, Cowichan FC (11-2-1) and Gordon Head (10-2-1) are poised to win the Div. 1 table. Cowichan has patiently played second fiddle to Gorge in recent seasons, finally winning the Jackson Cup in 2011 after losing in the final to Gorge in 2010.

Gordon Head came close last year and are only one win back of Cowichan.

This week Gordon Head host Gorge at Tyndall Park on Friday (Jan. 20), while Cowichan visited Sooke on Thursday.

Bays Utd. and Lakehill meet 8 p.m. Friday night at Finlayson. On Saturday Cowichan visits Juan de Fuca at Bear Mountain Stadium at 6 p.m. and Nanaimo hosts Prospect Lake at 7 p.m.
