A new fall/winter pickle-ball league has started in Saanich based out of Pearkes Rec. Centre.

Organized by Robin Milliken, the league consists of five teams with a total of 25 players.

The league uses a unique model where a player has a team, but doesn’t actually play with players on that team.

“It’s a five-session rotating basis, each player will play with everyone else in the league trying to get points for their team as well as the other players team,” Milliken said.

“This should make for good competition as the season progresses as players will get to know their opponents and how to play them,” Milliken said. “[The public is welcome] to come out and watch some good pickle-ball.”

With a possible 80 points on the line for any individual player during the two sessions the top five players in week two were Jack Kuyvennoven (74), John MacLeod (72), Phil Barker (71), Bill McKay (70) and Robin Milliken (68).

“A draft was held in order to pick teams with five volunteer captains,” Milliken said.

Captain Rick Adie of The Top Spins drafted players Alf Hartling, Bill McKay, Judy Hasiuk, and Teri Kielbiski. Captain Richard Krieger of Victorious Secret drafted Jack Kuyvennoven, Elisabeth Martin, Gustavo Verna, and Georgene Perrin. Captain John MacLeod of Hinky Dinkies picked Rob Milliken, Mike Vidler, Sandy Milliken, and Brenda Gauthier. Captain Mary Orme of The Court Crusaders chose Tom Ralph, Sue Willacy, John Orme, and Ann Morrison. Captain Jane Rich of The Lob Squad selected Robin Milliken, Judy Langford, Bob( Flash) Gauthier and Mel Scott.

Play starts 10:20 a.m. on Thursdays until 12:30 p.m.
