Long weekend means lots of local sport action

Lacrosse, baseball and more in the line up for Canada Day

The Canada Day weekend revs up the racing action at Western Speedway.

Friday, June 30 and Saturday, July 1 brings the Mid-Season Championship, featuring the AMCA Dwarf Car Invitational, plus Stock Cars, Mini Stocks, Super Sprints and Hornets. For tickets and more information visit westernspeedway.net. On Wednesday, July 5, the Hornet Series returns with wheel-to-wheel action on the oval.

The Victoria Shamrocks are back in action Friday, June 30, welcoming the Nanaimo Timbermen to The Q Centre for a 7:30 p.m. start. The ’Rocks return home the following Friday, July 7, when they host the Langley Thunder at 7:30 p.m.

Looking ahead, Friday, July 14 brings HarbourCats Night and the Shamrocks’ Salute to Local Heroes, presented by the Langford Legion at The Q Centre. Any fan showing a HarbourCats ticket from a previous game will get a general admission bowl ticket for $10 on entry to see the Shamrocks take on the Coquitlam Adanacs. With the Junior Shamrocks on the road this week, the Intermediate team takes the spotlight to start off July on Saturday, July 1, hosting Coquitlam at 1:30 p.m. at The Q Centre.

Turning to golf, the sixth annual Bear Mountain Men’s Amateur Golf Tournament hits the fairway July 8 and 9. For information and to register, visit bearmountain.ca.

Join Cool Aid at Bear Mountain Valley Course on July 14 for the Legacy Golf Tournament, a benefit for Victoria Cool Aid Society, supporting construction of new housing for people who are homeless. For more information and event details visit DriveToEndHomelessness.ca.

While the regular Greater Victoria Minor Ball Hockey season drew to a close last weekend, registration is underway for a brand new drop-in fall/winter ball hockey league. Running Sundays from Sept. 10 to Jan. 28 at Eagle Ridge Rec Centre, times will be set aside for players between six and 18 years old (birth years 2011 to 1999). While local cricketers have the holiday weekend off, the Div. 2 mid-week cricket league is back in action with the Metchosin team visiting the Castaways Wednesday, July 5 at Windsor Park. Play gets underway at 6 p.m.

In regional high performance baseball, the Victoria Junior Mariners host a Canada Day doubleheader on Saturday, July 1 at Henderson Field, taking on the Junior Royals at 12 and 2:30 p.m.

The Victoria Junior Eagles also play in town Sunday, July 2 when they host the Junior Royals for a doubleheader at Rotary Field with games at 12 and 3 p.m.
