Most people aren't struck by lightning in their lifetime let alone play on a team that never loses.
For a Langford mites 2 girls fastball team nicknamed the Lightning, winning was the only thing they did this season.
"It was pretty fun, I couldn't stop smiling," said catcher Aliyah Stevens, about the feeling of winning 15 consecutive games.
The team's final game of the season was a 20-6 victory on June 9 against a View Royal team.
The Lightning started the season in Tier 2, but the squad bumped up to Tier 1 after winning 10 games.
"Our toughest game by far was against the Tier 1 Langford Lightening team," said Coach Wade Davies. "That team was undefeated until we played them."
The win by only one run was among the most memorable for the team.
"We beat the No. 1 hand-picked team," said the nine-year-old back catcher. "I don' t think we were better than them though, we just listened to our coaches."
“We’ve had great pitching and great back catching," said coach Grant Stevens. "It can make or break a team."
In fastball, the catcher plays a crucial role because of the number of runs generated directly from stealing bases off balls that get past the catcher.
Both Stevens, the Lightning’s catcher, and the team's pitcher, Brynne Smith, have been headhunted for a super mites team to play at a tournament in Burnaby at the end of the month.
While winning is fun, the players have always just kept their love of the game first.
"What I like best is when it's a pop fly and I just try to catch it," said Kassidy Shaw, who plays second base.
"We all played a good season and tried our best," added Kayla Davies, who also plays second base.
The team's two coaches have spent years at the diamond and neither has ever seen a team remain undefeated for the whole season.
"I told them this is a once in a lifetime thing and to enjoy it," said coach Wade Davies.
Aside from the team working well together and having genuine skill, coach Davies said the players had great attendance at practices and games and the commitment to the team has paid off.
