Cadets from the Langford-based 848 Royal Roads Royal Canadian Air Cadet Squadron saw success at the Vancouver Island Cadet Zone Biathlon Competition on Jan. 13 at Mount Washington.

The local youth dominated the podium and may have a chance to compete against cadets from around the province next month at the British Columbia Cadet Provincial Biathlon Competition.

The cadets were amongst 44 youth from across Vancouver Island competing at Mount Washington, testing their fitness, teamwork and marksmanship skills over the six-kilometre course. Cadets competed in three divisions based on age: Cadet Junior (ages 12-13), Cadet Senior (ages 14-16) and Cadet Youth (ages 17-18). The Cadet Senior category was topped by Thomas Coakley and Konstantinos Beattie, while the Cadet Junior was topped by Aidan Wrigley and Issac Morrell, each placing in first and second place respectively.

Cadets Jonathan Larsen, Andrew Mackeigan-Reed, Kean McKenzie and Avan Wickheim also represented the Langford squadron.

Once results from around the province are in, cadets learn who earned a position in the Provincial Biathlon Competition to be held at Mount Washington on Feb. 9 and 10.

The cadet biathlon program is a recreational activity that has produced Olympians such as B.C.’s Emma Lunder. The cadets learn valuable skills through the program and develop self-discipline, increased confidence and a sense of accomplishment.

The Cadet Program aims to develop in youth ages 12-18 the attributes of good citizenship and leadership, promote physical fitness and stimulate the interest of youth in sea, land and air activities of the Canadian Armed Forces.
