JOCK TALK: Local lacrosse teams ramp up for playoff action

Mark your calendar, fan appreciation night at Western Speedway is Saturday

Head to Western Speedway Saturday, July 22, for Fan Appreciation Night – offering free admission courtesy of Seawings Express. Take in stock cars, mini stocks, dwarf cars and the cars from the Old Timers Racing Association, plus bombers, claimers, GoKarts and Hornets.

Return to the track Wednesday, July 26, for the Marlin Motors Hornet Series, offering exciting wheel-to-wheel action on the oval. Coming up, mark your calendars for the speedway’s Monster Truck Weekend July 28 and 29.

Turning to regional lacrosse, with the end of July comes the end of the Victoria Shamrocks’ regular season. This week the Shamrocks play Burnaby and New Westminster on the road (July 21 and 27) before returning home Friday, July 28 to face the Burnaby Lakers. Come to The Q Centre at 7:30 p.m. for an exciting close to the regular season.

On Sunday, July 23, the Junior Shamrocks continue the first round of their playoff series against the Coquitlam Adanacs in Colwood. At the Gazette’s press deadline, the Shamrocks were down 2-0 in the series. Game 3 will be played in Coquitlam, but the teams will return to the Island Sunday for a 2 p.m. start at The Q Centre.

With lacrosse winding down, hockey season can’t be too far away, the Westshore Wolves host their prospect camp at Juan de Fuca Arena Aug. 18 and 19. All prospects serious about playing at the Vancouver Island Junior B level are encouraged to register – learn more at westshorewolves.ca.

Registration is also under way for the Victoria Grizzlies’ pre-season summer training camp for Peewee, Bantam and Midget players, Aug. 14 to 18 at Westhills Arena. Learn more at victoriagrizzlies.com/camps.

West Shore cricket continues this weekend as the local Metchosin team travels to Windsor Park to face the Colts at noon on Saturday.

From one ball game to another, the boys of summer are still cutting up the local diamond. While the Victoria HabrourCats are on the road this weekend, they host a three-game stand against the Kelowna Falcons Tuesday, July 25 to Thursday, 27.
