JOCK TALK: Inaugural ball hockey season gets underway

It’s the week hockey fans have been waiting for. The Westshore Wolves are back this week with their first exhibition games of the season. Friday, Aug. 25 the Junior B Wolves take on the Peninsula Panthers at 6 p.m. at Panorama Recreation Centre before returning to host the Panthers Wednesday, Aug. 30 at 6 p.m. at the Juan de Fuca Recreation Centre.

The Westshore Rebels return to their home turf Saturday, Aug. 26, hosting the End of Summer Beach Party at Westhills Stadium, as the local boys take on the Valley Huskers. Fans will enjoy beach tunes, beach balls and a whole lot of fun, plus food trucks, beverages from Red Arrow Brewing and of course, great football. Gates open at 2 p.m. – get your tickets online at westshorerebels.ca and save.

Golf Canada is looking for host families to billet National Development Squad athletes from February through May 2018 as they live and train at Bear Mountain. Billet families provide the opportunity for motivated young athletes to realize their potential and live out their dreams as they work towards the next level. Turning to Victoria and District Cricket, Div. 1 league play draws to a close over the next few weeks, Saturday, Aug. 26 takes the Metchosin team on the road to Shawnigan, while Sunday, Aug. 27 brings the University and Alcos teams to Metchosin pitch for a noon start.

For action on the oval, this Saturday, Aug. 26 brings the Wilson and Proctor Big Rig Weekend featuring NABRA Big Rigs, Demo Series, Bombers, Claimers and Drifters to Western Speedway. Grandstands open at 4:30 p.m., with qualifying at 5:30, fan fest at 6 (time-permitting), and racing at 6:30 p.m.

With September just a week away, the Greater Victoria Minor Ball Hockey’s inaugural fall season is almost here. Drop-in game sessions run every Sunday from Sept. 10 through January at Eagle Ridge. Open to those born from 1999 to 2011, with different times for each age group, registration is $95 for the season – find registration information at vmbh.ca.

With the Toronto Raptors NBA basketball team coming to UVic for training camp Sept. 26 to 29, ticket information for the Sept. 28 intrasquad game is expected to be released in early September via the Vikes’ mailing list – learn more at govikesgo.com/raptors.
