JOCK TALK: Busy week on West Shore scene

Colin Gall hits the highlights of local sports teams and games

Head to Western Speedway Saturday night (June 18) for the Don Mann Excavating Night at the Races.

The full night of racing action features The Keg Steakhouse & Bar Late Model Drivers Challenge Twin 50s, where racers will compete for the Rick O’Dell Memorial Trophy. As well there’s the Galaxy Motors Stock Cars, Mini Stocks, Dwarf Cars and the Old Timers Racing Association. Grandstands open at 4:30 p.m., qualifying at 5:30 and racing at 6:30.

On Wednesday, June 22, the speedway hosts the Marlin Motors Hornet series, promising exciting wheel-to-wheel action.

In Western Lacrosse Association local lacrosse action, the Victoria Shamrocks look to extend their winning streak to three games when they play the Lakers in Burnaby on Tuesday, June 21.

The ’Rocks finish their week Friday, June 24 when they host the New Westminster Salmonbellies at The Q Centre, with play opening at 7:45 p.m.

In Junior Shamrocks action, the team is on the road Saturday (June 18), going head-to-head against the Langley Thunder. The team returns to local play Sunday, June 19, hosting the Delta Islanders at The Q Centre at 5 p.m.

In West Shore Division 1 cricket action, Metchosin hosts the Islanders at the Metchosin pitch this Sunday, June 19, with play opening at noon. In mid-week Div. 2 play, Metchosin takes on Fulham beginning at 6 p.m. Tuesday, June 21 at Windsor Park.

With the Rio Olympics on the horizon, the University of Victoria welcomes a host of elite international talent for the 28th annual Victoria International Track Classic, at Centennial Stadium this Sunday. This year, headliners include reigning world high jump champion Derek Drouin, four-time Olympic medalist Jeremy Wariner and Canadian middle-distance superstar Melissa Bishop.

On the diamond, the Premier Victoria Mariners start their week with a roadtrip doubleheader in Coquitlam against the Coquitlam Reds on Saturday before returning to Victoria on Sunday. The Ms host White Rock Tritons in a doubleheader at Layritz Park with games at 11 a.m. and 1:30 p.m.

The Premier Victoria Eagles return to the diamond with another action-filled week in PBL baseball. Play opens Saturday, when the Eagles host White Rock in a doubleheader at Lambrick Park. (noon, 2:30 p.m.) The squad hits the road Sunday taking on Whalley.

On Wednesday, June 22 the Eagles head over the Malahat for a 6:30 p.m. game against the Nanaimo Pirates.

Saturday (June 18) the Junior Premier Mariners host the talented Langley Blaze in a doubleheader at 1 and 3:30 p.m. at Layritz Park before crossing town to face the Victoria Eagles on Sunday at Lambrick at noon and 2:30 p.m. The Junior Ms face the Eagles once again on Tuesday, June 21, but this time it’s on home turf, playing at Henderson Park at 6 p.m.
