JOCK TALK: BCHL Grizzlies lead off busy week of sports

The Q Centre plays host to plenty of high-level hockey over the next week

The junior A Victoria Grizzlies hit the ice with an action-packed week ahead of them.

Starting tomorrow (Jan. 8) the Grizz welcome the Powell River Kings to The Q Centre at 7 p.m. After a one-day break, the local boys are back on the ice Sunday, hosting the Langley Rivermen at 2 p.m. The Grizzlies hit the road for a Tuesday game in Duncan against the Cowichan Valley Capitals at 7 p.m.

Finally, the Grizzlies finish their week with a long road trip to Prince George to square off against the Spruce Kings on Friday, Jan. 15.

In junior B hockey, the Westshore Wolves come back strong this week starting Friday when they travel to Peninsula to take on the Panthers at 7:30 p.m. at Panorama Recreation Centre.

The Wolves continue their busy week the next day when they head over the Malahat to face the Kerry Park Islanders at 7:30 p.m. at Kerry Park Arena.

The Wolves welcome the Panthers back to their own barn on Wednesday, Jan. 13, with a 7 p.m. puck drop at The Q Centre.

Finally, Westshore finishes the week on Thursday, Jan. 14, facing the Victoria Cougars at 7 p.m. at Archie Browning Arena. The Cougars beat Westshore 5-0 at The Q Centre last night.

There’s still lots of other great hockey on the calendar. The Juan de Fuca Grizzlies Midget Tier 1, 2 and 3 teams all play this coming weekend.

The Tier 1 squad visits Nanaimo on Saturday before heading to Pearkes Recreation Centre on Sunday to take on cross-town rivals the Saanich Braves at 3 p.m.

The Tier 2 Grizzlies hit the highway and rides the ferry for a double-header in Powell River this weekend while the Tier 3 team enjoys two home games, hosting North Island TriPort on Saturday at 5:30 p.m. at The Q Centre and Port Alberni at 5 p.m. there on Sunday. Come cheer on some great up-and-coming local athletes!

In high school basketball action, the Belmont senior girls AAA team heads to Oak Bay High for a game on Tuesday, Jan. 12 at 5:45 p.m.

At Royal Bay secondary, girls basketball continues with the AA Ravens squad hosting Pacific Christian School at 5:45 on Tuesday. Royal Bay hosts Lambrick Park the next day at 5:45 p.m. in Colwood.

Looking ahead in Vancouver Island Soccer League men’s play, Division 3B Juan de Fuca will get back to the turf Saturday, Jan. 16 against the Saanich Fusion FC at Lochside Turf at 6 p.m.

Rugby fans can now sign up for early bird tickets for the Americas Rugby Championship games coming up at Westhills Stadium next month.

Canada’s mens fifteens take on Uruguay Feb. 6 before facing Brazil Feb. 20. For more information visit events.rugbycanada.ca.
