Athletes on the West Shore are proving that the sport of fastball is alive and well on Vancouver Island.

Teams with Langford Minor Fastball competed on the Mainland recently, capturing both gold and silver in their respective tournaments.

The league’s U19C team participated in the Surrey White Rock tournament, which included four Vancouver teams and another team from Central Saanich. The girls’ team played six games over two days and only lost one game in round robin play. During the gold medal game, the team, coached by Dave Saunders, Wendy Parker, Glen Grass and John Musgrave, was behind for most of the match until the last inning when the girls battled hard to go ahead by two runs to capture gold. Continuing the league’s winning streak, the other U19C team, coached by Ritch Cauthers and John Turcotte, played in Port Alberni and went 3-0-1 in round robin play. The team, which played with nine regular players and one pickup, defeated Lakehill 10-7 in the gold medal game. The U16C girls were also in action against eight teams in a tournament in Richmond. The team, coached by Ian Turner, played four round robin games, losing only one to the North Shore Angels. The team met the Angels in the semi-finals. Trailing 5-3 in the final inning with two outs, but with clutch hitting and gutsy base running the team was able to score three runs to advance to the gold medal game.

Despite their efforts in the semi-finals, the team lost 5-3 to the Port Alberni Blazers in seven innings to bring home silver.
