Bulldogs rout Vanier in tournament opener in Langford

The host Belmont Bulldogs are off to a fast start at the Island AAAA boys high school basketball championships in Langford.

The Bulldogs opened up a 33-15 by the end of the first quarter and rolled to a 102-56 win over the Vanier Towhees of Courtenay on Thursday night.

Tonight at 8 p.m. Belmont takes on Nanaimo Dover Bay, the number 1 North Island seed, in one of two semifinal. South #1 seed Oak Bay plays Cowichan in the other semi at 6 p.m.

Isaac Ickovich led the Belmont attack against Vanier with 28 points and was named player of the game. Teammate Julius Kennedy added 23 while Nishad Tarak dropped in 18 points.

The final is set for 8 p.m. Saturday and the winner gains automatic entry into the upcoming provincial championships. The runner-up can be challenged by the third-place finisher for the other Island berth, if those two teams have not played each other already in this tournament.
