Belmont makes it to the semi finals at the B.C. championships

The junior boys basketball team has defied odds to make it to the semis

The junior boys basketball team has won three straight games to make it to the semi finals at the 48th annual Telus junior boys basketball provincial championships at the Langley Events Centre.

As the No. 23 seed going into the tournament, the Bulldogs have beaten three top 10 seeded teams to make it to the semis and many members of the team have been sick, some were game-time decisions if they would be able to play.

The Bulldogs chewed through the No. 10 seed, Centennial, with a 50-45 win. It was a tight game all the way with lead changes in the first quarter. Belmont led the game from the end of the first, with their biggest lead holding a 22-14 advantage over the Centaurs in the second quarter.

Riley Merryweather and Markus Modrovic led the Bulldogs with 10 points each.

Belmont met the No. 7 seed, Kelowna Owls, in its second game on Saturday. The game was back and forth until the second quarter, and the Bulldogs held the lead to win the game 53-42.

Modrovic had a team-high 16 points and Hunter Thomsen chipped in 11 points.

The next challenge for the Bulldogs was the No. 2 seed Sir Charles Tupper in the quarter finals. The score was 27-27 at halftime and finished the game with a 48-38 win.

It was a great team win, with Thomsen taking player of the game honors, and Modrovic grabbed 17 rebounds.

Belmont will match up in the semi final round against the No. 3 seed Lord Tweedsmuir today at 4:30 p.m.
