Belmont icon remembered with girls basketball tournament

Bulldogs senior girls host annual event named for longtime former Belmont teacher

Starting tomorrow (Jan. 27), the Belmont secondary gym will ring with the sounds of senior girls basketball, as the Bulldogs host the annual Bill Spotswood Memorial Tournament.

The host team opens today with a noon game against Gulf Islands secondary, with the winner of that game advancing to the semifinals at 6 p.m.

The eight-team event includes local teams from Spectrum and Stelly’s, plus Port Alberni and mainland squads from Terry Fox, Carson Graham and Killarney.

The third-place game is slated for 10:45 a.m. Saturday, with the championship final set for 2:45 p.m.

Bill Spotswood taught and coached at the old Belmont high school for 35 years after starring in various sports including basketball, volleyball, soccer and track and field while a student back in the 1950s. The gym in the old Belmont school was named after him.
