Members of the Zone 6 B.C. Summer Games girls’ softball team celebrate their gold medal win.

The team from Vancouver Island-Central Coast (Zone 6) dominated at last weekend’s B.C. Summer Games in Abbotsford and many West Shore athletes had a hand in the sizeable medal haul.

Zone 6 took home 65 gold medals and 171 medals in all to take the top spot in the medal table and multiple West Shore athletes found themselves on the podium, many on the top step.

Golfer Nolan Thoroughgood from Colwood finished first in the boys’ event with an aggregate score of 140, while his team took home a bronze.

Colwood’s Devon Rees, Metchosin’s Jade Hadley and Carmen Eilersten and Sierra Gillis from the Highlands contributed to the region’s gold-medal winning girls softball team.

West Shore athletes Brodie Strugnell, Jacob Mellish, Seve Cordero, Casey Wilson and Matthew Atkinson brought home gold in field lacrosse.

Mara Lambert-Wilson will have to be careful she doesn’t strain her neck this week, as the Langford synchronized swimmer brought home four medals. She earned a gold in the age 13 to 15 team event, a gold in duet and two individual silver medals.

Girls volleyballers Taylee Pomponio, Gracie May and Jocelyn Sherman were the other West Shore athletes that returned from Abbotsford sporting shiny gold medals.

Silver medals were won by Nico Pryma (athletics), Jayden Cull and Josh Walker (baseball), Logan Judge (volleyball), Alexis Dunning (rugby) and Olivia Godek (beach volleyball).

Langford’s Montana Garrington (equestrian) brought home a pair of bronze medals to complete the medal haul from West Shore athletes.

Maggie Fehr, Hannah Massey and Tiana Maat took home silver medals for their efforts in 3 on 3 basketball. The girls and their team lost to Vancouver Coastal by just a single point in the gold medal game.

In total, 44 athletes and four team officials from the West Shore participated in the July 22 to 24 Games.
