Working horses can be treated better

Pounding the pavement not the right place for working horses

Re: Quaint tradition questioned (News, Aug. 8)

I was brought up with work horses on our farm in Alberta.

The horses were part of the family. They never had to walk all day on hot pavement, breathing fumes and being confused with all the noise.

My dad would get up early in the morning to work the fields to make sure the horses were never working in the hot sun.

If a horse could have its choice, I’m sure they would prefer the earth under their feet, working fields with a couple of birds riding along on their back, instead of the city environment.
