Plastic bags aren’t the problem, humans are

A ban on plastic bags makes as much sense as banning cars, reader writes

Re: Take plastic bags out of the picture (Gazette, April 19)

Oh, here we go again.

Just as stupid, irresponsible people are the root cause of traffic mayhem on the Malahat, the same kinds of humans are behind all that harm being done by plastic bags.

Never mind that testing years ago showed multi-use plastic bags – the ones now favoured by many shoppers as a replacement for single-use bags – are almost certainly more contaminated with microbial nasties than the single-use bags, go ahead and ban single-use bags.

Just like the Malahat “solution” of making it wider and then discovering that speeding dolts are now driving even faster. Never mind that a single decomposable bag in a mixture of soft plastic bags heading for recycling will ruin the entire batch, go ahead and advocate for decomposable bags.

If we’re going to ban bags, let’s also ban cars. The problem is humans who don’t give a damn. How about we tackle that problem and see how many other problems diminish or vanish.
