The crux of Mr. Sketchley’s letter in the Dec. 7 edition speaking to the subject of film studios is to opine on the role of government. Mr. Sketchley’s rather eponymous view on this subject is that government ought merely to ensure public safety for honest people, who can then be creative and productive. A few crosswalks and we’re done? Is this the vision?

Government in contemporary society needs to be large enough to both stimulate and protect economic, social and political matters. With respect to a film studio being built in Victoria, a basic fact is that the province of B.C saw a total of $3.4 billion of production in 2017.

Vancouver received the lions share of this amount, and Victoria saw $12M – .0035 per cent. One has to be pretty unambitious to be satisfied with this paltry amount.

Congratulations to Saanich council for realizing that we can do better.
