Mute swans not heard from

I am wondering where the mute swans have gone from the Esquimalt Lagoon. There used to be at least 16 of them along with one lone Trumpeter swan. Now the Trumpeter is all by himself and we miss the mute swans.

I understand that there are some people who believe only native species belong in a bird sanctuary and the mute swans are so called invasive. However, they have lived at the Lagoon at least for the 15 years we have been here and that should make them residents.

I hope someone will tell me what happened to the mute swans.
